I finally finished up the binding on my Pantone Radiant Orchid Quilt that I am lovingly calling "The Purple Rain." I used the custom dyed fabric from Vickie Welsh for some of my raindrops, the binding and the back. I used Superior King Tut variegated thread for the rain. If I do something like this again the rain quilting will go on first and the raindrops will be appliquéd on afterward. Starting and stopping the quilting for each raindrop was kind of a pain. The quilt is 20" X 23".
I loved making this quilt. The appliqué and the quilting were new techniques.

The third raindrop on the left on the top is from the sample fabric I ordered that is the official "Radiant Orchid".
I have some radiant orchids of my own just starting to bloom.
This is so gorgeous! I love the quilting. Very nice work!

ReplyDeleteI can imagine to stop and start the quilting around each raindrop was a pain, but it was totally worth it because it is beautiful and a really great effect!

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is gorgeous.Love the design and the name!
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous mini! I noticed you used a lot of the same fabrics I did! Great minds think alike:) I was wondering when you say you'd quilt the rain first, would you just quilt through the top and batting and then add the binding later, or does your quilting and applique show through on the back? I am always curious about how people go about doing more complicated constructions like yours because most things I see are online, not in person, so I can't really see how it's constructed.
ReplyDeletelovely quilt! It's very appropriate for this "spring" we're having!
ReplyDeleteOh, my gosh I love this! Purple is my favorite color. Always have been, always will be! I find it difficult to use in my quilting, but you made an amazing, amazing purple quilt :-) LOVE IT :-)

What a beautiful mini! I love the purple rain. :) Wonderful choices in fabrics and I think it's very cool that you included the official radiant orchid sample!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilting, and I can't believe you did the start/stop thing, what a pain! But worth it! Gorgeous work. :)
Just fabulous!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I thought you had maybe appliquéd the rain drops after quilting, but to read that you actually stopped and started, wow! That's a lot of thread tails to bury :)
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Love the fabrics you chose!
ReplyDeleteThis is really pretty - love how the background is densely quilted but the raindrops are left unquilted.
ReplyDeletePurple Rain is really beautiful and I love your blooming orchid - it's magnificent!
ReplyDeleteThanks for you kind words on my blog. It's not the tiny size of the Dear Jane blocks that slows me down, but all the inset seams and the applique!!!
Take care,
